OK, I will admit it, since my diagnosis, I have become a bit of a freak when it comes to Sarcoma. I mean, before my diagnosis, I had never heard of it before, and here I was harboring this monster without a clue. Also, for almost a month, doctors had not a clue that sarcoma was hiding in my arm, even after blood work and scans! This is the tricky part about sarcoma. I have learned that this disease, can often hide itself, and be mis-diagnosed. So my theory is when in doubt, cut it out.
So why am I talking about this now? Well one reason is July is just about here, and that means it is Sarcoma Awareness Month! To help raise funds and awareness for Pittsburgh Cure Sarcoma, I am hosting a fundraiser through Fun Fore All, located in Cranberry Twp. These passes are available June 28-July 4! Save $5 & $5 gets donated to the cause. These passes can only be bought this week, but are good throughout the summer. To get yours today, click on the image to go to their site, select 2 hour Fun Pass, and use the code PCS2015_
The main reason has to do with my son. So here it is I am making it public, and I am praying hard that his growth is nothing more than a little extra tissue. So recently we were at the dentist, and the dentist pointed out a growth on his gums. Not overly concerned, but simply stated it is most likely a fibrous mass, not to worry but it may affect his teeth when he gets his adult set. Well, as soon as fibrous mass came out of the dentist mouth, I was going into full panic mode, given my history. So I got on my phone, and began contacting people to find an oral surgeon. The next day we saw a friend of the family, and he put my mind at ease a little. However, he cannot do the surgery because our insurance is not accepted at his practice. Then we saw surgeon #2 and we are scheduled for removal in 3 days. As a mom you can't help but worry. I really do believe it is nothing more than some extra tissue, but we are moving forward with removal, so it doesn't turn into a bigger deal later. So here I am living out my, when in doubt, cut it out, with my son. He will be undergoing general anesthia and the surgery itself will take under 5 minutes. So prayers for a safe and speedy procedure, and a quick recovery.
So why do I write? It is helping me through this time. It is helping me to educate others about this disease that is more common than we know. Sarcoma, can literally pop up anywhere. It is simply a soft tissue cancer, so skin, nerves sheaths, bone, gums, fat, muscles, uterus, and fluid, it can hide. I feel like nothing is off limits. While this post is not here to spread panic, but to alert people of this disease, and to encourage people to listen to their bodies. As adults, we often take the approach that we are fine and don't need to see a doctor, especially as young adults. I mean we are young, right?! What could be wrong with us? What I have learned, is cancer does not care how young, old, fit, out of shape, male, female, or what race, religion, or plans you have for the future. So anyone is at risk at any time.
How to combat cancer?
- take care of yourself and those you love
- be aware of any changes
- take your concerns seriously and get it checked out
- be proactive
As with any cancer, early detection gives you the best chance to kick its butt!
So if you know somoene who just doesn't feel right, or notices a new growth, point them in the direction of this blog. My hope is that through education and awareness, we can increase survival rates not for just sarcoma, but all cancers!
Take care & God Bless!
